The Bourbon Graveyard: Trends That Deserve to Rest in Peace

Every Halloween, we like to raise a glass to the dearly departed — not just the spirits in our glass, but the bourbon trends that have (thankfully) passed on.
From outdated “rules” to overhyped fads, some beliefs in bourbon culture are better left buried. So grab a pour, step carefully through the Bourbon Graveyard, and pay your respects to a few ghosts of whiskey past.
Here Lies: “Older Is Always Better”
Somewhere along the way, age statements became status symbols. The higher the number, the higher the prestige. But as any good distiller (or drinker) knows — older doesn’t always mean better.
Yes, time in oak can deepen flavor, but too much can leave a bourbon tired and over-oaked. Some of the best bottles we’ve ever poured were lively eight- and ten-year-olds that still had something to say.
May your 8-year live forever.
Here Lies: “Bourbon Should Only Be Neat”
The purists meant well — but let’s be honest, bourbon doesn’t need to prove its toughness.
A splash of water can open up flavors, an ice cube can soften the burn, and a well-made cocktail can showcase a whiskey in ways a neat pour never could. Bourbon isn’t about rules — it’s about enjoyment.
He swore by purity… until a single ice cube taught him humility.
Here Lies: “Rarity Equals Quality”
Scarcity may drive up prices, but it doesn’t guarantee greatness. We’ve seen limited releases gather dust while humble, everyday pours win hearts (and palates).
The next time you’re chasing a unicorn, remember — the best bourbon might already be sitting on your shelf.
Gone too soon… but not missed as much as we thought.
Here Lies: “Smooth Means Superior”
We get it — “smooth” sounds good. But bourbon’s beauty often lies in its bite. Spice, heat, character — that’s what makes each bottle memorable.
So instead of chasing “smooth,” chase flavor. Let your taste buds have a little adventure.
Laid to rest, silky but soulless.
Here Lies: “All Bourbon Tastes the Same”
That’s like saying all music sounds the same because it uses notes. Every distillery has a fingerprint — different mash bills, char levels, and aging environments tell their own story.
You just have to listen… or sip a little slower.
May he rest in unawareness.
Raising a Glass to What’s Still Alive
Bourbon’s world is full of life — new distilleries pushing boundaries, traditionalists keeping the flame, and drinkers discovering what they love most.
At Aged in Oak, we celebrate it all. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just getting started, our tasting parlor is the place to explore, learn, and taste without the judgment (or the cobwebs).
So come visit. Let’s raise a glass to good spirits — the kind that never die.
